Obituary of Leona Toews

Leona Margaret Wiebe Toews was born to Thomas M. Wiebe and Margaret F. Toews in Ste Anne Manitoba on March 9, 1932. She peacefully passed away 8 days before her 88^th birthday at Maplewood Manor on Sunday, March 1, 2020.

Mom spent her growing up years in Steinbach.

She gave her heart to the Lord and was baptized in the Church of God in Christ Mennonite on December 30, 1945. Her faith was precious to her and she remained faithful to the end.

On July 7, 1954 she married Gilbert Toews in Steinbach, Manitoba. They enjoyed 64 years together. Mom was very lonesome after Dad passed away. She appreciated the many visits from family and friends. The visits from grandchildren and great grandchildren were precious to her during her quiet days.

Mom enjoyed her brief teaching career and continued as a substitute teacher in Hanover School Division. Some of us children remember having her as a substitute in our younger grades. We have fond memories of her helping Dad when he was groundskeeper at Loewen Windows properties. Our home was the center of much activity and included a large extended family. She enjoyed hosting all those who entered their home.

Mom supported Dad in his work at Maplewood Manor as a board member and then as administrator. We appreciate the joy they found in residing there. She formed many warm friendships during these years.

Mom was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She cared deeply for all of us and held a special place in her heart for all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to cherish fond memories are Rob and Laurie, Steinbach, Manitoba; Margaret and Rodney Wohlgemuth, Beausejour, Manitoba; Ralph and Jennice, Steinbach, Manitoba; Peter and Jessica, Edmonton Alberta; nine grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren; one sister Kathleen and Louis Barkman, Neepawa, Manitoba; one sister-in-law Leanna Wiebe, Steinbach, Manitoba; and one brother-in-law Donald Toews, Calgary, Alberta.

She was predeceased by her husband, parents, parents-in-law, brother, and numerous in-laws.

The family would like to thank the staff at Maplewood Manor for the loving care Mom received.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with viewing at the chapel prior to the service. 

Burial will follow at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
