After a remarkable life, Elsie Fast Kliewer of Steinbach (formerly of Kleefeld), passed away peacefully on April 29, 2012 at the Rest Haven Care Home. She reached the age of 90 years. Left to cherish Elsie’s memory are her children, Judy (Fred) Goertzen, Ken (Iris) Kliewer, Joey (John) McMillan, Lori (Loren) Hiebert, six grandchildren, their spouses, and six great–grandchildren. Elsie is also survived by brothers Arnold (Anne), Elvin (Della), Harry (Marion), Dennis (Frieda), sisters Marian (Bert Kliewer), Bernice Bartel, sisters-in-law Frieda Fast, brother –in-law Alvin Neustaedter. She was predeceased by husband Jake, brother Clarence, sister Verna, brother-in-law Len Bartel. Sadly, Elsie’s sister Eleanor also passed away on April 29. Jake and Elsie married in 1941. They spent the majority of their life in Kleefeld where Elsie found her niche in church and community. She was a wonderful homemaker, and excellent hostess, a loving mother and grandmother. She pursued many interests which included sewing, painting, gardening, canning, selling Tupperware, and running a small fruit farm. She was the Kleefeld correspondent for the Carillon News from 1961 to 1980. Jake and Elsie enjoyed travel, fishing, visiting and were blessed to be able to do this for many years after their move to Steinbach. The church community was important to Elsie. She served as a Sunday School teacher, a Pioneer Girl pal, the Cradle Roll, and enjoyed being part of the sewing circle. As sight and mobility worsened, Elsie slowly went into decline. The Rest Haven staff remember Elsie’s bright smile and her sometimes crusty nature. The family extends special thanks to the Fernwood Home Care staff, the St. Adolphe Care Home staff, the Rest Haven Care Home staff and Dr. Krahn for their care and support of our mother. Viewing for Elsie Kliewer will take place on Wednesday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel. Burial will take place take place on Thursday, May 3rd at the Kleefeld EMC cemetery. Due to family considerations, a memorial service will take place on Wednesday, June 6 at 2:30 p.m. at the Kleefeld EMC Church.
