Obituary of Alfred (Bill) Reimer

Our beloved Bill went to be with his Lord May 4, 2012. Bill passed away peacefully at his Steinbach home with loved ones at his side. Bill was the first-born of seven to Alfred and Margaret (nee Friesen) Reimer in Windsor, ON. When Bill was three years old, the family moved to Steinbach. The adventures of three curious and energetic brothers are almost legendary. About age 11, Bill was diagnosed with a form of blindness. It was with great sadness the family moved to Ontario in order to be close to Bill as he attended School for the Blind in Brantford. Staff and students loved the prairie boy who trained squirrels and brought the pets to class in his shirt pockets. Classmates still say he is the only squirrel tamer the school has known. Bill’s love for trucking was also ignited at this time. Drivers for Reimer Express Lines would pick him up and drive him home to Windsor for the weekend. Bill’s eyes were miraculously strengthened so he could join regular life at home. As son of part-owner/manager of a trucking company, Bill learned to work hard loading and shunting trucks. Bill’s skill for diagnosing and fixing trucks was proven – even at the age of 12. Bill started apprenticing for the mechanic trade. When Bill was 17, the family moved to Oakville, ON. The family-run gas/service stations and car wash employed many. Bill was busy as the sole mechanic. Later, married life blessed Bill with three children: Carolynne (1965), Rob (1967), and Jennifer (1973). They are still his pride and joy. After working on the TransCanada pipeline, Bill settled in Oakville where he and his brother Ken established Reimer Vehicle Repair Services. Racing super late stock car circuits had already begun in the 1960’s but gained momentum in the 1970’s. Bill handed out tracts and Gideon Bibles and New Testaments to racers and fans. In 1987, while still operating the mechanical business, Bill bought a grape farm in Beamsville, ON, to fulfill a lifelong dream of growing fruit, such as pears, plums, apples, and grapes. In October 1989, Bill married Loreen, who became his helpmate in all things – family, vineyard, garage, trucking, and racing. Bill shall be remembered for his love for life, and genuine love for people. Always willing to repair vehicles, fridges, sewing machines, and toys, he was the go-to problem solver for many near and far. His example of doing a job right the first time plus his goal to make every job fun for his workers was his trademark. He mentored young men to the top provincial scores of their years for the trade. Bill’s history is marked with hardship. In terms of health, rheumatoid arthritis, lymphoma, pulmonary fibrosis and congestive heart failure restricted his body, but not his will. Disabled was not in Bill’s vocabulary. Each new trial or limitation motivated Bill to design solutions. Each sickenss opened his heart to others suffering in need of hope. The tract ministry begun at the race tracks now reached doctors’ waiting rooms. Even when Bill suffered most, his concern was for the well-being and eternal security of others. Bill is predeceased by his parents, Alfred & Margaret Reimer of Oakville, brother-in-law Ed Connor, and sister-in-law Heather Giles-White. Left to mourn his passing are: his wife Loreen; children: Carolynne Goldglas, Rob (Valerie) Reimer, and Jennifer Reimer; his dear grandchildren: Zachary, Jesse, Samarra, Andrew, and Emily; siblings: David Reimer, Dale (Lynda) Reimer, Elizabeth /Liz (Ron) Morgan, Ken (Cathy) Reimer, Susan Connor, Jim (Marlene) Reimer and their families; along with Loreen’s siblings Robert White and Arlene White. Viewing will be held on Thursday, May 10, at 7:00 pm with a devotional at 7:30 pm, at Birchwood Funeral Chapel. The funeral will be held Friday, May 11, at 2:00 pm, at the Evangelical Mennonite Church, 422 Main Street, Steinbach, with interment at Heritage Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made to South Eastman Health Palliative Care Program, Box 470, La Broquerie, MB, R0A 0W0 or to The Gideons International In Canada, Box 3619, Guelph, ON, N1H 7A2.
