I was lucky enough to work for John and his wife Shirley back in 2014. They both welcomed me into the firm with open arms and John helped me to discover my strengths within the job. He was a wonderful man and mentor and will truly be missed by many. His kind hearted spirit and phenomenal work ethic will be his legacy. Prayers to Shirley and the rest of the family during this time.

Shirley and Family,
Marty and I offer our sympathies on John's passing. We trust you will experience God's comfort and the encouragement that comes with family support.
John served on the board of directors of the Mennonite Heritage Village museum for a number of years during my tenure at the museum. I enjoyed getting to know him. He made valuable contributions in his roles as Finance Committee Chair and as Board Chair. We appreciated his desire to serve and his passion for the museum.
Wishing you peace.

Everyone has different memories & experiences, but this memory of my Uncle John is one most treasured.
As a kid I learned many lessons from my parents, but perhaps Uncle John taught me one of the most valuable lesson combinations. When it comes to games, the game is not over until it’s over and if you want to win it you need to earn it. Being a family member or friend did not get you any credit or easy breaks when playing games. As a kid it was frustrating as heck that Uncle John would just win and win and win. As an adult, I now realize that he was in his own way teaching me how to not give up and work for the win, or be gracious with a loss and learn how to improve for next time.
Over the years I have told the story many many times about how Uncle John kicked my butt as a kid when we played games. And even though my winning was rare, there are no hard feelings or bad memories of playing games with him.
Whatever games your playing now Uncle John, you kick butt and make them earn every win!

We hadn't seen John and Shirley for a long time, but we have many fond memories of good times together. Curling and "special tea" at the restaurant being a couple that come to mind.
Our sincere condolences to Shirley and family.

Being one of the older grandchildren in the family, I remember Uncle Johnny, as we always called him, when he was still at home with his parents on the farm. I remember an overnight visit to the farm, accompanying Uncle Johnny to the barn where he introduced me to a bull called 'Peanut', and remember him singing as he milked the cows. I remember being sent with a mason jar of kool-aid through a path of tall weeds to the field where he was haying, and getting a ride on the tractor. And his Wrigley's Spearmint gum sticks that he would sometimes share with us. He was also a wonderful accordian player, who often entertained at Christmas etc. He pursued further education, finishing his high school by correspondence and taking his accounting classes in the evenings at university. Thinking of you, the family, as you process this great loss, and the difficult time of covid, making our usual ways of remembering and mourning more difficult. May you have peace, may you feel the Presence of our Good Shepherd. (The photo is one he gave me as a child...he must have been in high school still I'm thinking because it's one of those school photos.)
