I know the rest of that story from Leo Schmidt. It goes something like this as Leo Penner told me.
The next day early in the morning, Leo was sitting in the Barbershop chair. This is the barbershop that when the phone rang, whoever was sitting in the chair had to answer the phone because the barber was deaf. You had to take the person’s name and the barber would show you on the calendar what was open for an appointment. When Leo answered the phone guess who was calling.
It was Milton. So after a short conversation, setting up an appointment for Milton, and by the way Milton knew it was Leo he was talking to, Leo said “so Milton, do you still want to see us in your office this morning “.
After a short moment,Milton said “no, just forget it”

Our Condolences Shirley + Family.
Shirley you've heard this story many times.
Leo + I were doing another quick trip from. Brooklyn via T.O. to Steinbach in '82. We just past Social Credit Jake's Place and the 290 sucked air. I woke your Leo for suggestions. He said stay in the left lane as much as possible, we maid Steinbach + at Husky Jake's we decided to go left of the boulevard into Penner's against traffic. Wouldn't you know it the boss met us there in the evening doing that move. He said I want to see you boys tomorrow 0800 am in my office. Later Leo said to me not to come he would handle it. Sure enough I never heard any more about it. I think Leo enjoyed taking the heat for others.
Sincerely Leo Schmidt.

I always enjoyed working with Leo. I worked for MidLite Electric and whenever we had high, overhead work, we would call Leo. We’d be in the buckets and Leo was on the ground operating the controls. He always got us to where we needed to get to, He understood “us” and the job we had to do. And I always felt so safe way up high. He was such a smooth operator. And of course there was always the, “Doug, Doug,I got a story, or a joke, to tell you”.
I was so sorry to hear of his accident and had the fortune to meet him several times since then, the last being about a year ago at Grace Hospital when he was there to visit his sister and I was there to see my wife after her knee surgery. Here he was coming down the hall with his wife and son, smiling to beat the band. I’m sorry for your loss. It’s been a tough four years.

I worked for Leo for several summers and he always treated me like an adopted son. I have many fond memories of summers spent cutting and trimming trees with Leo and Johnny, and Shirley stopping by with the most amazing lunches anyone could ask for. I am deeply saddened that Leo has passed on and send my condolences to Shirley, Johnny and the Penner family.

Our sympathy to Mrs Penner and Johnny. I have many good memories of chatting with Leo. We used to pick up extra wood at tree cleanup sites and after borrowing his log splitter numerous times, had the pleasure of custom pinstriping it for him. From then on it was ours to use whenever we needed it. I just called Leo a few weeks ago and told him I wanted to come see him in Labroqurie soon. I'm sorry I didn't get there before I saw he had passed away.

I had the great privilege of working with leo at le chalet. His kindness knew no limits leo taught me how to play crokinole as it was one of his favorite pastimes. We played endless amounts of games of it he was always patient in his teaching of the very best strategy on how to win it. The world was a better place for leo being part of it and now feels a little darker and colder without him. I will miss him deeply.

Mr. Leo Penner, better known at LeChalet as Leo. A kind and gentle soul. He was a friend to all residents and staff at LeChalet. Leo always had a joke or a story to tell and even a Werther's candy to share. A quick smile and a "How she going" when I'd meet him made for a better day. I am sure there were days where pain take control, but I did not hear him complain. Rest easy Leo, you are missed.

I had the privilege of meeting Leo The Tree Man when I was working at Le Chalet in La Broquerie. Leo would donate his time and truck to come and install Christmas lights and doing other work for us when needed. And then, we heard of his accident and his need to live in a place where he would receive the help he needed on a daily basis. We were only too happy to find him such a place at Le Chalet. He made friends quickly and NEVER did I hear Leo complain about the fact that he was now confined to a wheelchair. He was truly an inspiration. My sincere condolences to everyone.
