Obituary of Mary Louise Headings

Mary Louise (Miller) Headings passed away peacefully on January 16, 2011 at Rest Haven Nursing Home. She was born in Jet, Oklahoma, the sixth child of Alf B. and Lovina (Yoder) Miller. She was preceded in death by husband Ivan on February 14, 1987 and son Richard in 2003. At six years of age her family moved to Yoder, Kansas where her father ran a grocery store. They later moved to South Hutchison, Kansas where she finished grade school and then had three years of high school. Following this she went to Hesston College and Bible school where she completed grade 12 and her first year of college. She completed eight hours of summer school at Bethel College in Newton, Kansas. The following two years she taught the lower grades at what was then called Harmony School in Yoder, Kansas. At the age of ten or eleven she felt the need of a Savior and committed her life to Christ and was baptized as a member of the Yoder Mennonite Mission of which her father was a founder. It was at Hesston College that she met her future husband Ivan Headings. They were married June 23, 1940 by Bishop Harry Diener. To this union were born five children; Richard Headings of Harrisonburg, Virginia. (deceased), Patricia Sharp of Belleville, Pa., Donella Keim of Harrisonburg, Va, Roger Headings of Steinbach and Robert Headings of Lebanon, Oregon. From mid 1940 till about 1952, the family moved around the midwest, including Iowa, Oklahoma and Colorado. In 1952 or early 1953 they moved to the Lebanon, Oregon area where her husband Ivan became pastor of a local Mennonite church, and Louise worked as a homemaker. Louise also worked several years at the Lebanon Hospital in the records department. In 1963, the family started a new adventure, moving to Pikangikum, Ontario. Ivan taught school, with Louise as a homemaker and part time assistant at the school. They served in this capacity here as well as other parts of northern Canada for a total of 10 or so years. As they grew older they moved to Steinbach, Manitoba where both Louise and Ivan served as the first house parents to mentally challenged adults at Steinbach's first group home. In addition, Louise worked at the Bethesda hospital in the records department for several years. After retirement they moved into a small apartment in Steinbach. In the mid 1980’s her husband, Ivan suffered a stroke. Louise cared for him at home and later at the extended care unit. She was a faithful, caring and loving wife. After his death, she lived in the apartment until she needed nursing care. In February of 2007 she moved to the Rest Haven Nursing Home. Louise was a godly woman who lived a full life of service, touching so many with her kind and gentle spirit. She displayed an attitude of acceptance, forgiveness and thankfulness. She loved reading her Bible and singing. Many a choir has been blessed with her strong alto voice! Her ready smile, wink and warm handshake made those around her feel noticed and appreciated. She blessed us as a family in so many ways over the years. The family is so grateful for the wonderful and loving care that has been provided for our mother Louise these past four years at the Rest Haven Nursing Home. The funeral service will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with viewing at the chapel prior to the service. Interment at Memorial Cemetery. If friends so desire donations may be made to Haven Group Foundation (for Rest Haven Nursing Home), 177 Woodhaven Ave, Steinbach, MB, R5G 1K7
