Obituary of Maria Toews

In the early morning hours of July 13, 2012, Mary (Schroeder) Toews breathed her last breath and went home to be with her Lord and Saviour, reunited with those who had gone before. Born December 17, 1918 in Blumenthal, MB, near Letellier to Abraham and Helena Schroeder, she married Henry S. Toews on November 20, 1938. The couple settled down to farm 7 miles Southwest of Grunthal where Mary led a busy life, mothering, farming, and as wife to a trucker. Their move to Grunthal in 1971 saw a change in their lifestyle. Traveling, hobbies of knitting and making crazy quilts, cooking delicious food and enjoying gardening and grandchildren took up most of her time. She was baptized in 1938 and her faith kept her strong through various difficulties over the years. The sudden death of her father, her mother, sisters and brother moving to Paraguay, an accident involving her husband, seeing a daughter enter the mission field and deaths in her immediate family are just a few that come to mind. She was known for her fairness – treating her children equally and lovingly, and loving each in-law, grandchild and great grandchild as they joined the family. After her husband Henry passed away, Mary again made a change in her lifestyle. She moved to an apartment in Steinbach, then to Fernwood and a year ago her health necessitated a move to the Menno Home in Grunthal. On July 6 she was admitted to Bethesda Hospital where her health deteriorated quickly. She leaves, to mourn her passing, six children – Anne Harder, Margaret Toews, Henry and Erna Toews, Pete and Annie Toews, John and Hilde Toews, James and Sandi Toews and their families, 30 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and 6 great great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Henry S.Toews in 1999, grand-daughter Kathryn Toews in 1994, great-grandson Cole in 2005 and son-in-law Peter Harder in 2006. The family would like to thank the many caregivers who took such great care of Mom – in Fernwood, in the Menno Home and lastly in Bethesda Hospital. Mom, Gramma, Great-Gramma – we love you and look forward to seeing you again. Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Monday, July 16 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. and at the church prior to the service. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grunthal CMC Church with interment at the Grunthal Cemetery. If friends so desire donations may be made to the Family Life Network (Low German Radio Broadcast), 225 Riverton Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2L 0N1
