Very sad to hear of Tommy's passing. When I was just 4 or 5 years old living down the street from the Bueckerts, I used to go over to their house and play with Tommy's old toys. However, a favourite memory that I have carried with me from my years in Niverville would certainly be riding on Tommy's shoulders as we walked over to the Pines Restaurant to get a Cuban Lunch chocolate bar. My deepest condolences to all those he left behind. -Ryan Kehler

What a shock learning of Tom's passing! It does not seem that long ago we were young and life would go on forever.
Tom was one of my first friends when we moved to Niverville in the 1960's. It must have seemed like we were quite the unusual pair at the time, the little Japanese kid and the bigger German kid!! We stayed close through our adolescence and into our early twenties.
I remember we had such good times together, fishing trips, hanging out at the Pines and at Ile des Chenes Hotel and just driving up and down the Niverville Main Street.
Such good memories!
Rest In Peace my friend.
Condolences to the family, Percy and Betty Kaita

It is with sadness that ai learned the news of Tom’s passing. He is the first neighbour I learned to know, when we first moved from Winnipeg, into Niverville, in ‘57.
I recall running from our house, approx. a block west of theirs, to play with Tom - in summer heat it was running through a lawn sprinkler. They had running water, we did not - and a TV!!
We attended Niverville Mennonite Sunday School together. During our youth, it seems to me, the family joined the new church church, Elim.
Tom and I got into some trouble with the school board, as little boys - maybe Gr 3-4. The 2-3 story (Gr 1-12) school building had burned down over Christmas holidays. “Huts” (essentially housing shells, sans interior walls) were moved onto the property, as classrooms. Outhouses were set up, in the nw corner of the yard, built with soft KB board sheathing.
During summer vacation, Tom and I were playing on the schoolyard. We noticed that boys had kicked or elbowed small holes into the exterior walls of the boys’ outhouse. We discussed this, and concluded it wasn’t fair that the girls’ outhouse was not equally equipped.
We entered it, and were in the process of remedying the inequity, when Mr Kliewer’s voice, (custodian who lived across the street from Bueckerts’ and kitty corner from the outhouses at school), from outside was asking us, in our mother tongue, (Plautdietsch/Low German), “Are you boys having fun?”
Peter, Tom’s dad, was school trustee. Eventually, once our parents learned of escapade, agreed that we boys would reimburse the school board for repairs. I had to learn to work for money, at that young age, then count it properly, before handing it over to “Mr Bueckert”!
Our friendship was cemented, for years, until we lost touch, when I moved away in ‘76.
We met occasionally on visits, over the years - the last time, as I recall, was likely in ‘91/92.
May comfort surround you, his family, and close friends. May God’s peace be with you, always, as you remember him, and enjoy the lasting gifts he entrusted to you.

Carolyn and I had the pleasure of being Tom and Betty's next door neighbours at Lee River for several years. We developed a lasting friendship and got to know each other's families. We would socialize regularly, with many ocassions occurring in an inpromptu manner.
Tom was an extremely talented builder and successful businessman and was willing to offer advice to all who required it. Tom had a great sense of humour and enjoyed laughing. We would oftern try to outdo each other in the comical department, but Tom could never quite compete. There were often times when in his effort to top me, Tom would end up telling a joke that I had told him previously. Somehow he could never remember me telling that particular joke.
Whenever in his presence you could see the love he had for Betty, Keith and Candice. When Marc and Danielle joined the family, Tom was overjoyed to have them as part of the Buekert clan. Just when you thought that Tom could not demonstrate anymore pride for his family, along came the grandchildren.
As a grandfather, Tom wanted his grandchildren to enjoy all that lake life had to offer. As a result, boat rides, quad rides, tractor rides, swimming and the chipmunk feeder became a common activity for the children. On numerous ocassions, Tom could oftern be found in his workshop building some sort of toy or piece of furniture for the grandkids.
Tom left this world far too early. It is our hope that Tom has finally found the peace he always deserved.
On behalf of our entire family, we extend our heart-felt condolences to Betty and the extended Buekert family. You are all in our thoughts and prayers during this exteremely difficult time. Rest well, Tom.
Don Halbert
