Obituary of Katharina Neufeld

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Katharina (Tina) Neufeld on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at the age of 74.

Tina is survived and will be lovingly missed by her husband John with whom she was blessed to have had over 56 years together which included having six children: two sons and four daughters.

Irvin & Liz Neufeld (Justin, Jessica & Mitch – Hannah, Tanya, Kyli, Megan); Verna & John Gerbrand (Ashley & Megan, Amber & Jared- Isaac, Asher, Aaron & Paige); Anita & Jake Wiens (Taylor & Caleb, Chloe); Stella & Mark Driessen (Izzy, Emma, Olivia); Brian Neufeld & Addie Duchamre (Molly).

She was predeceased by her parents Wilhelm & Helena Hildebrand, daughter Frieda, three brothers and four sisters. She leaves to cherish one brother, three sisters, three brothers-in law, nine sisters-in-law and their families.

Mom was born in Canada and was part of a large group that boarded a boat to make a new life in Paraguay. Although she was just a baby when she made this trip, her father kept a detailed diary of the entire experience from start to finish. Mom treasured those words and had the diary translated into English and made into a book for her children and grandchildren to read.

Life was not easy for mom and her family, and they worked hard to make ends meet. This was probably where she learned her good work ethic. Mom was baptized upon the confession of her faith in June 1966. This faith carried her through all the highs and lows of her life.

After she married her husband John, along with four children in tow, they made the decision to move back to Canada. Once in Canada, mom got a job working for MJ’s Kafe’ as well as other various cleaning jobs. They were also blessed with one more child.

Mom was a proud hard-working lady who had amazing strength and determination. Her energy frequently seemed to have no end. She was a fabulous cook and baker with her specialties being perogies and meat buns. Families came from far and wide to purchase baked goods from her. She got great pleasure providing these tasty treats, knowing that she had a part in all the joy and memories that would be made around those dinner tables.

But her greatest love was her family! Her husband, children and all her grandchildren. Family is where she gained all her strength to face all her medical issues that she had over the years. This past summer when she was in the hospital, and the doctor gently told her she was too ill to be able to go back home again, mom cried out to God, and He granted her the final desire of her heart. Against many odds, mom was able to come home just days before her birthday. We were so blessed and thankful to have mom for another nine months and 12 days. Any of us who came to see mom in those months fondly remember the many puzzles sitting on the dining room table ready for us to add pieces when visiting.

We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all the families and friends for your prayer support and all the visits to mom and dad. We also want to express our deepest appreciation to Dr. Reimer and the Palliative Care team. As well as a huge thank you to the Home Care aides who looked after mom with such dignity and kindness these last months.
