Obituary of Wesley Friesen
Wes passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB, surrounded by family, after a short battle with cancer.
He was born in Winkler, MB, to Harry and Helen Friesen on March 30, 1956. He grew up with a younger brother Vern, younger sister Cheryl, and many cousins and friends.
His first years of school were in Winkler, the family then moved to Steinbach in 1966, where he continued his education. In Wes’s teenage years he accepted Christ as his personal saviour at Red Rock Bible Camp.
A highlight of Wes's younger years, was motocross racing together with a great group of friends.
In his early 20's Wes went to Alberta to work in the oil rigs. When he returned, we noticed a change in his demeanor, and later he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Wes then entered care facilities in Winkler and Selkirk. In those facilities he made many friendships. He was known for his generosity and easy-going personality, as was often acknowledged by the care workers. Wes loved his snacks: chips, chocolates, Pepsi and smokes. When people went to visit and brought him those treats he was quick to share them with his friends.
Wes will be missed.
He is survived by his mother, Helen Friesen, brother Vern (Sharynn), sister Cheryl Bartel (Bryan) and five nieces and nephews: Chelsea, Kylie, Braydon, Jaelyn, Devyn and their families.
He was predeceased by his dad Harry L. Friesen.
We are thankful for the many caregivers, family and friends who have shown love to Wes over the years.
We are so happy that his earthly struggles are over and is resting peacefully with Jesus in heaven.
The memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with reception to follow. To join the family via livestream, please click HERE shortly before the start of the service.
