Obituary of Firmin Joseph Yvon Catellier
Peacefully on Friday, March 3, 2023, with his family by his side, Firmin (Fred) Joseph Yvon Catellier (age 83) passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer and Alzheimer's. Fred was able to fight his battle at home until the past few weeks when he was admitted into De Salaberry District Health Centre.
Fred was born in St. Malo on September 3, 1939. The family moved from St. Malo to Vita in 1945 for the continued farming. Fred joined the workforce when he was 15 years old working in bush camps and then on the pipeline. In 1959, he married Eveline Curé. Fred and Eveline raised their five children where they set roots on their farm near Vita. They continued farming at Vita even after they bought their acreage near St. Malo.
Fred had worked various jobs while continuing to farm but always found time for his many passions. He played broomball, slow pitch, and hockey (which he played until his mid-60s). He was an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman until just a few years ago. Gardening was his biggest passion of all as he continued doing so until the fall of 2022. Nobody could leave his yard without fresh vegetables whether they wanted them or not.
Fred leaves to mourn: his wife of 63 years Eveline (née Curé); daughter Gerte (Bobby), sons Paul (Irene), Dave (Joanne), Daniel, Joey (Monique); grandchildren Sarah, Amber (Ben), Houston, Kyle (Deena), Alexi, Chris (Kayla), Lise (Logan); and great-grandson Jaxon; he also leaves to mourn, four sisters: Imelda, Yvonne, Lina (Richard), and Evelyn.
He was predeceased by his parents Marcel and Donalda, father-in-law and mother-in-law Armand and Victoire Curé, as well as many siblings.
Celebration of Fred's life will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, Manitoba.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Fred's name to CancerCare Manitoba or the Alzheimer Society.
