Obituary of Helen Wiebe

Helen died August 16, 2012, with her family by her side at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Helen was born in Grunthal, Manitoba, to Abram and Margaret Friesen on October 24, 1925. She lived there until she married when she moved to Winnipeg with her husband Henry and their first daughter Ellen. They lived in Winnipeg all their married life. Mom was a person who had many varied interests. She was an accomplished crafter. Her hands were seldom idle as she was always making something for someone. She was also a very social person who loved to throw dinner parties, cooking exotic meals for her guests. She would spend time planning the perfect menu. She was a good cook, Ivan and Ralston really enjoyed mom's homemade buns. Mom also loved to travel, taking her last trip just before her death to see her daughter in Edmonton and her sister-in-law in BC. During our childhood our home was often full of guests. Many were the cousins who came to the city to find jobs and apartments. Mom and Dad were always there to lend a hand and help them get settled in the city. Mom and Dad were married almost 67 years. They enjoyed their married life together and celebrated many milestones together, travelling, helping those less fortunate and just enjoying being with friends. Two years ago mom was diagnosed with liver cancer. She fought very hard to stay here but that was not to be. A few days before she died Mom said "I just can’t beat this". That was the strength of mom's spirit, she didn't give up easily. When she set her mind to do something she almost always accomplished it. Mom was a person who had a deep faith in which she found comfort during these trying times. Thank you to all who helped with prayers and visits. It meant a lot to our mom. Helen is survived by her children; Ellen McKellar, Phyllis Selley (Ralston), Ivan Wiebe, her sister Anne (Leonard), her brother Peter (Edna), grandchildren Daniel, Amanda (Ryan), Adam (Kelsey), Nickolas (Maricel), Kristy, Rylie, Chase and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry S. Wiebe, her daughter Judy Rawdon, her son-in-law Jim McKellar and grandson Jonathon. The funeral will be Wednesday, August 22 at 1:00 p.m. at the St. Vital Catholic Church, 1629 Pembina Highway. Viewing will be prior to the service. There will be a private family interment.
