Obituary of Henry Sobering

Henry S. Sobering passed away peacefully at Rest Haven Care Home, Steinbach, MB, on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, with his wife, Kathy, at his side.

He was born May 17, 1934, to Henry and Helena Sobering (Nee Schalla) in the Hanover Municipality just east of Steinbach. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Kathy. He is also survived by one daughter, Lorraine (Al) four sons, Norm (Cheryl), Larry (Tina), Dan (Fred), and Tim (Andrea), as well as nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by one sister, one brother and four sisters-in-law.

He was predeceased by his parents, nine brothers and three sisters, three brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law.

Dad grew up in a large family in East Steinbach. He left at a young age to work construction all over Manitoba for Galbraith and Tallman Bros. On March 15, 1958, Dad and Mom were married at the EMC church in Steinbach. In 1960 Mom and Dad moved to their farm in Zhoda and Dad began working for the Department of Highways in St. Pierre. In 1979 Dad realized his dream of being a full-time dairy farmer, he and Mom continued to run the dairy farm until they retired 1993. In 1998 they moved to Steinbach to be closer to family. Dad kept busy by shoveling snow in winter and cutting grass in summer. Dad also enjoyed fishing, whether it was with his brothers or his kids.

In 2007 Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and the slow decline began. Though the disease robbed him of his memory his personality would peek through often.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 17, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 465 Henry Street, Steinbach, MB. Pastor Terry Gudmundson will officiate. Interment to follow at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
