Obituary of Elizabeth Funk

On Monday, August 28^th, 2023, Elizabeth Funk of Grunthal, Manitoba passed away peacefully at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, Manitoba.  She was 98 years old. 

Elizabeth will be lovingly remembered by her six children, Anne, Susie (Melvin), George (Lydia), Betty, Henry, Martha (Dave); 16 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren, along with one sister-in-law.  Elizabeth was incredibly proud of her large family and could often be heard boasting to friends and family about them all.

Mom was predeceased by her loving husband, Henry W. Funk; as well as her three brothers, son-in-law Tom Bueckert and great-grandson Kyle Friesen.

Born in Russia, on September 14^th, 1924, to George and Anna Kasper, she was the oldest of four children.  At the young age of four, Elizabeth’s family immigrated to Canada and settled south of Grunthal.   

It was here that Elizabeth eventually met the love of her life, Henry W. Funk. Mom was baptized upon the confession of her faith on June 4, 1944 in the Spencer Bergthaler Church just South of Grunthal, Manitoba where she remained a faithful member until her death. Mom and Dad were then married on October 22nd, 1944 and settled on a dairy farm in Barkfield, Manitoba where they raised their family.

Elizabeth was known to all who loved her for her exceptional hospitality, amazing cooking, and beautiful smile.  She was also an expert gardener, tending to multiple gardens of both fruit and vegetables which were then canned and frozen for the winter.  By fall, her basement pantry resembled a modern day grocery store!

Elizabeth led a beautiful life, full of love for her family and her Lord and Saviour, Jesus.  As she aged and her health began to decline, she often spoke about being ready to “go home” to heaven.  Now that she is home, she will be deeply missed by her family.

The family would like to say a special thanks to Elizabeth’s family doctor, Dr Allen, for her considerate and sympathetic care over the years.  Thanks also to the St. Pierre paramedics and the staff at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre for their compassionate care on her final journey.

Celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 3^rd, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grunthal Bergthaler Church, 101 Southwood St., Grunthal, Manitoba with the viewing one hour prior to the service.
