Obituary of John Harder

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Johan (John) Harder, at the age of 81. John passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg, MB, on the early morning of Monday, October 9, 2023. 

John is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Helena; his brother Jacob (Anna); his daughters, Herta (Jasch-predeceased) and Ingrid (Ervin); grandchildren, Juergen (Susanne), Amali (David), Heidi (Blake), Bianka (Robby), Michael, and Daniel (Meagan); and ten great-grandchildren. 

John was born in Schoental Colonie, Menno, Paraguay on October 24, 1941. He grew up in Paraguay where he met Helena. They later married in 1962. A few years later they fostered their daughter, Herta and then adopted their second daughter, Ingrid. 

John and his family immigrated to Canada in 1974, where John worked for Kitchen Craft, Loewen Windows, and the Mennonite Heritage Village, and also volunteered at the MCC Thrift Store, making many great friendships along the way.

The family appreciates all the prayers and support from friends and family and takes comfort knowing he is now at home with Jesus, reunited with his parents, siblings, and friends, and is now at peace.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 14, at 11:00 a.m., at the Douglas Mennonite Church, 1517 Rothesay St, Winnipeg, MB.
