In 1983, when my sister and I were traveling through Europe, (I was 20 years old; she was 23), we stayed overnight at the Janz Team dormitory with the intention of catching a bus in the morning that would take us to a train. Unfortunately, we slept in and missed the bus. We had gone by foot to the small village where the bus stop was, hoping to find another bus. There was none for another 24 hours. Suddenly a gentleman appeared, and my sister recognized him as Mr. Sunderwald. He was a frequent customer in the local store in Niverville, Manitoba, where my sister was a clerk, and a good friend of our Grandfather. We told him of our plight, and he invited us to his home, where Mrs. Sunderwald served us a hot lunch and packed us a bag lunch, complete with a bar of swiss chocolate. Mr. Sunderwald drove us to the train station and sent us on our way. Lovely people. A miracle had occured!

I have many fond memories of being loved and cared for in Irene's home. I was always welcomed like a brother to Scott. Irene was so kind and understanding of some of the shenanigans Scott and I got up to. My German Christmas with the Sundetwalds in 1987 was so much fun! Irene's heart full of love and joy for life will be missed.

I remember Irene so well from the time we worked together in tent ministry in Austria. She came to help and became such a blessing to us all. During that time we sang duets together and with Vi Hilz also trio numbers. I have attached a picture. Wonderful times. After that she married a wonderful man and they have known the richest of God's blessing on their lives. To Hardy and the family be assured of my prayers. You walk a path I am somewhat familiar with and I know something of the emptiness you must feel. May the Lord himself give you comfort and be your strength and shield. Bob Wahl

Aunt Irene was a fun Aunt. I remember making pulled toffee with her when I was very young. Also, she took us to the Telephone exchange building where she was a switchboard operator. I was so impressed! She used to tell us many stories, some from the bible. But, Connie and I also vividly remember a story that she told us about a boy who is sent to the meat market to buy liver. He foolishly spent the money on candy. So he stole the liver from a corpse in town. As our Grandmother, and Aunt Irene lived next door to the Funeral Parlour in Provost, we (in our childhood minds) half believed the story! This tall tale stuck with us for over 65 years! We enjoyed all the times we have spent with her other the years, when we could get together.

As a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, I feel very Blessed to have shared several years of Worship, Fellowship and Friendship with Irene and Pastor Hardy. We were blessed to have them in our choir. Dr. Sunderwald translated songs for the Choir. Both made a great team, always spreading love, kindness and Joy. The Word of God is your comfort at this time of separation. Praying for you, Gerlinde
