Obituary of Jason William Matishuk

Jason William Matishuk, aged 50 years, of Winnipeg, MB, passed away suddenly, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, MB.

He is survived by his loving wife Sylvia, his parents Bill & Nancy Matishuk, his sister Leanne (Bob) Panchuk, parents-in-law Lloyd & Marie Melnychuk, brothers-in-law Jeff (Deneace), Brian (Taylor), and nieces Presley and Ryah, and sister-in-law Crystal (Michael), nephews Tristen and Jonathan, and many cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.

Jason was born in Winnipeg but soon after moved to the family farm, where he spent his early years growing up and attending school in Vita. After graduation, he went into the workforce and found his passion for computers. Even from an early age, we saw his love of technology. From the first video games he had and the hours spent trying to master the levels to when the internet became available and the hours spent on the first dial-up technology.

He had a few jobs over the years, but his favorites were being a disc jockey (DJ) and his love of computers, which brought him to New Flyer Industries, where for the last 16 years he worked in their IT department. His passion for this line of work was evident in the pride he took in making sure that all things were running smoothly and the time that he put into it. Another passion of Jay’s was WOW (World of Warcraft), an online game that he spent many hours playing with cousins and friends.

When he met his wife Sylvia, he found his soulmate, and together they settled down in Winnipeg.

Side by side, you could find Jay and his wife learning how to garden (becoming homesteaders), travelling to Florida, Hawaii, and Mexico, which he loved the most, visiting with family and friends, or just hanging out in their backyard sanctuary, dreaming about their future adventures together.

Jason was always generous with his time when it came to others.  He was always helping family and friends with technology, from computer set-up and issues to cell phones and apps. If anyone had an issue, they could always reach out, and Jay would be there to help out. This also extended out to shingling and sod laying; if you needed him for anything, all you had to do was call, and Jay would be there.

We wish to express our most sincere gratitude to all the staff at the Health Sciences Centre. We can’t thank them enough for all the kindness, support, and compassionate care that Jay received.

In lieu of flowers, please contact Canadian Blood Services to donate blood in Jay’s honor.  It is with these donations that we were given more time with him. Financial donations in memory of Jason may be made to Canadian Blood Services, 777 William Ave, Winnipeg, MB.

Rest in peace, Jay; your smile, kindness, and big, generous heart will never be forgotten.
