Obituary of Edmar Reimer

It is with grief in our hearts but also with thankfulness for a life well lived that we, the family, announce the peaceful death of our father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend Edmar Henry (Kliewer) Reimer on Sunday, April 21st, 2024, at the Poseidon Care Centre, in Winnipeg, MB., where he had been a resident for the last two months.

Edmar (Ed) is survived by one son, Peter, of Chicago and one daughter Jacqueline and husband David Adkins of Evergreen, Colorado; one sister, Iris, and husband Mike Nowakowski of Winnipeg. He also leaves to mourn four grandsons and two nieces.

He was predeceased by his parents Ben H.W. and Anna (Aunch) Reimer. He was a caregiver and companion to his mother for many years after his father passed.

Edmar was born in Steinbach on June 1st, 1938, where he also received his formal education. He was given the Governor General’s award in grade 11 and was the valedictorian for his class at their grade 12 graduation.

Edmar had a love for adventure and worked in many areas from gardener, meter reader, school bus driver to office worker and casino manager. His love for adventure led him to have these jobs in many locations, some of which were: Vancouver, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Ottawa, Thunder Bay and Steinbach. He was a great cook and had memorable dinner parties for those privileged to attend. He was very well read, especially in politics, religion and in Mennonite history, making him a well informed and interesting conversationalist. He was very fond of his mother tongue Plautdietsch and willingly spoke it.

Travel was another great love of his, taking him around Canada, the US and into Mexico, but he especially loved his many trips to Europe, trips he mostly took alone. Being alone led him to meet many interesting people, sometimes resulting in invitations to their homes. When he was asked lately which had been his favourite countries, he said that they were Germany and Austria.

In his latter, more sedentary years, even though his eyesight and hearing, were poor he enjoyed his love of sports, which he watched on his giant TV while sitting in his favourite chair. When the time came for him to leave his home and go to a care home his words, even though he didn’t want to go, were “I have adjusted to many things in my life and I will adjust to this, too”.

We will miss you, but we know that you are now once again with the many family members and other friends who were waiting for you when you got to the other side.

The viewing will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 7:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with coffee being served at 8:00 p.m., all are welcome. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
