Obituary of Diedrich F. Wiebe

After a brief illness our husband and father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Diedrich F. Wiebe, lately of Steinbach went to be with his Lord on Saturday November 17, 2007, at age 83. Dad was born in Blumengard, in the RM of Hanover, on December 21, 1923 to Gerhard K and Maria Wiebe. In 1943, upon the confession of his faith, he was baptized in the Chortitzer Mennonite church in Chortitz, now Randolph. After meeting Katherine Friesen, the couple got married on October 14, 1943. They spent most of their married years on the farm they owned, within a few hundred yards of the farm house where dad was born. As Dad gradually retired from farming, he concentrated more on the insurance sales business he operated from home for 22 years. He was also active in the community and at various times served as President of the New Bothwell Egg Producers Co-op, and the New Bothwell Co-op Dairy. Involvement in these practical community endeavours prepared him well to pursue the long-held dream of a co-operatively run funeral home for Southeast Manitoba. He lived to see the realization of this dream and last spring attended the tenth anniversary of Birchwood Funeral Chapel. He also worked in the church, serving on the Chortitzer Mennonite Waisenamt (an arm of the church that aided orphans, widows and others in need). For a number of years he was a Sunday school teacher and song-leader in the church he and Mom worshipped in most of their married lives, namely the Silberfeld Chortitzer Mennonite Church. He leaves behind his loving wife Katherine, and four married children: son Edwin (and Elnora) Wiebe, son Larry (and Lorraine) Wiebe, daughter Debbie (and Curtis) Krahn, and son Rick (and Heather) Wiebe; grandchildren Christabel (and Simon Hughes), Roger, Tania, Matthew, Melissa (and Mark Hiebert), Ryan, Joel, Adam, Ethan, and great-grandson Dylan. He was predeceased by his only sibling Gerhard in 1937 and by his father and mother in 1973 and 1985 respectively. He will be greatly missed. We love you Dad – today and always. The family would like to thank the Home Care team at Woodhaven Manor for their compassionate and sensitive care that brought much dignity to his final days. Viewing will be held Wednesday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held Thursday, November 22 at 1:00 p.m. at the Steinbach Chortitzer Mennonite Church with interment at the Silberfeld CMC Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the CMC Board of Missions, Box 968; Steinbach, MB R5G 1M7
