Obituary of David K. Reimer

Peacefully on Monday, May 20, 2013 with family at his side David K. Reimer went to his eternal rest. He will be greatly missed by Emma, his wife of almost 67 years, his children David (Frieda), Margaret Beckman (Norman S.), Siegrid Angelatos (Dimitrios), Edith Swanson (Don), Klaus (Connie), Heinz(Elsie), Rudy (Leslie)his 24 grandchildren and their families, many relatives in Canada, USA and Germany. He was predeceased by four brothers, three sisters, two grandsons and three great-grandsons. David was born in Russia on March 30, 1919 to his parents Franz and Susanna Reimer. In 1940 he was taken into the Russian army and later became a German POW. He had many stories to tell about his life in Russia and his war experiences. After the war he met and married Emma Schoenrock, also a refugee in Germany. In 1953 they immigrated to Canada, settling near Steinbach. In 1957 he started farming in the Friedensfeld area. He loved working with the land and the animals. In 1978 due to Emma’s poor health he sold the farm to his son Heinz and moved to Steinbach. He and Emma loved to travel and visit family in British Columbia and Alberta and later to Germany when he was reunited with his extended family after they were able to leave Russia. He was so pleased when some of these were able to move to Manitoba. David and Emma were founding members of the German Church of God in Steinbach, helping out in many capacities. When the first Russian-German immigrants started arriving they helped them to get settled in the Steinbach area as they knew how difficult it was to start again in a new country. David was a kind and generous man with a wry sense of humour, a gentle man who was respected and loved by all who knew him, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, a man of deep faith and commitment which was demonstrated in many practical ways. He was proud to be a Canadian citizen. He had a deep love and gratitude for this country and enjoyed the freedom and beauty of it. His funeral will be held on Saturday, May 25th at 2:00 pm at Birchwood Funeral Chapel , 150 Penfeld Drive, Steinbach, with viewing before the service. Donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 100-1465 Buffalo Place, Winnipeg, MB R3T 1L8
