Memorial Tribute of John Kauenhofen

December 27, 1928- April 9, 2020

A tribute to John Kauenhofen on the one-year anniversary of his passing in lieu of a service because of the Covid 19 Pandemic.

John and his twin brother Dave were born into a large family in Gretna Manitoba on December 27, 1928.

When he was 18 years old, he had a serious farming accident which altered his life’s path.  While recovering, he met the love of his life, Lenora Thiessen, and they were married for 67 years and blessed with two daughters and one son.

During his life time he worked on the farm, Pool Elevator as a grain buyer and then returned to school for more education which led to his teaching and administrative career.  He taught and was the principal in Moosehorn and Morris School Districts.  He then became the special education coordinator for the Morris MacDonald School Division from which he retired in 1985.

After retirement, he had time to volunteer at Teach Beyond (Janz Team) as a teacher in Brazil as well as in the home office, Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Care, Bibles for Missions Thrift store as well as always in involved in his local church.

His faith in Jesus as his Lord and Savior sustained him through the ups and downs of life.  He was a man of utmost integrity in every part of his life.  Humor played a huge role-he teased mercilessly and was an avid story teller from which his grandchildren and great grandchildren greatly benefitted.  He had a very creative imagination.  “Rather be fifteen minutes early than one minute late” was his motto.

He could always be bribed with chocolate pie, chocolate cake or “fibastang”.  He loved his sweets.  Music also was an integral part of his life and he was involved in choirs and quartets over the years.

He and Lenora enjoyed traveling and were able to visit Brazil, the Caribbean, Greece, Turkey, the Panama Canal and Alaska.

Family game times were special.  Rook, Scrabble, “Golf” and Uno were some of his favorites.  There were also memorable camping trips with the family in the old tent trailer.

He was diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2015 and his health slowly deteriorated to the point where a move to Meadowood Personal Care was necessary and where he received excellent care until his passing.

To honor John’s memory, donations can be made to either Samaritan’s Purse Canada or Back to the Bible.

Remaining to miss him are his wife Lenora, children Cheryl (and Myron) Henschel, Valerie, Cameron, 14 Grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, four siblings, extended family and friends.
