My name is Alanna (Isaac) Toews. Mr. Martens was my teacher grades 2-4. It was his first teaching job and he walked into a tough situation. You've heard the advice for teachers "If you want your classroom's respect don't smile before Christmas"? Mr. Martens took that on. We did not see the jovial side of him in our little country school. I saw it though when he visited my parents. Suddenly his whole demeanor changed. What we did see was a marvellous example of fair play in every direction. Let me put it to you succinctly but with emphasis: we had not seen "fair" exemplified in our school until he came along. All children have an innate sense of fair and when it is exercised by their teacher they can thrive. He was just what our school needed. He was a good teacher and a patient one.
I enjoyed how his "realness" shone through in the picture gallery. My condolences to his family

Our condolence to the Family of this wonderful man. I think we will always remember his kindness towards us. Especially as a young pastor coming into the ministry. He always encouraged and simply spoke words of affirmation. Blessed to have known him and Mary. Well done good and faithful servant will be a phrase he has heard.

My condolences to all four of you boys. I remember well coming to your place as a young boy after school to play with my best friend, Allen. The hospitality of your parents was something I treasured. I recall feeling a bit lost when you moved to Fort St. John, B.C. Thinking of you Allen, and your brothers. Love, Errol Isaac

Cornie was man who had a very caring heart. He always knew how to speak in truth and honesty. As my Pastor, Mentor and friend, I learned a lot of what it meant to be a Godly leader. I never heard a harsh word from him. My prayer is that you as a family and friends will carry on his love to see people come to the LORD. Thank God for people like him.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Martens family. When I was a young, inexperienced teacher at SBC high school, I could always depend on Cornie for support, encouragement and wise advice. He was gentle but strong, serious yet funny. After a difficult class or day, he'd say "This too shall pass ", and I still think of that quite often when I'm tempted to complain.

My deepest sympathies to the Martens family. I first met your dad when he was a teacher at Steinbach Collegiate - he was a great teacher. In subsequent years our paths crossed and he always had a kind and gentle comment to make.

Condolences to the Martens Family. Its saddening for us to hear of your dads passing. We've had many memorable times with him. He was my mentor after I was elected, much appreciated. At one point when was over for supper we talked about the hear after, and he remarked what better place is there. We're all assured that we know where your dad is now . We can say he was faithful to his calling to the end. We're so thankful for his services rendered......R. I. P. Neil /Tina Warkentin

Mr. Martens was one of my favourite teachers in High School (late 1980s). One hot day, he insisted on keeping the lights off in the classroom so it wouldn't get hotter. I objected, stating fluorescent lights don't give off heat. He insisted they did. So I asked if he had ever burned his hand on a fluorescent bulb. His very quick reply was "No, but I haven't burned my hand on my furnace either." I conceded the victory to him.
My condolences to the family.
