Our sincere condolences to Ena and the entire family. We will miss the many “pop” in visits that we would have with both Jim and Ena. Pastor Scobbie baptized Shannon, married us and dedicated our children. We were beyond blessed in being able to learn from his solid preaching of the word. Prayerfully- Jason and Shannon Hiebert and family.

This morning I wondered how Pastor Jim and Ena were doing since we had lost contact with them. A quick search revealed he had passed away less that two weeks ago. We have fond memories of fellowship with Jim and Ena through our connection with the EFCA while you were in Pembina. Jim was always so warm and genuine in our friendship as a fellow pastor. He was a help to me when I like him, retired and stayed in the same church I had pastored. We shared mutual friendship with LaVerne Wood Gryte and I imagine they were there to welcome him home. Our deepest sympathy, Dear Ena, he was a jewel of a man. I Peter 1:3-9

We will always appreciate Jim, his ministry and prayers for us since we visited when engaged to be married in 1978. We enjoyed our vacations together especially in 2018 when we spent time with Jim and Ena in Kananaskis. We will never forget looking for bears to photograph - from the safety of the car! Other special times were spent up the North Shore. We look forward to meeting again. Philip and Laura, loving brother in law and sister in law.

We were so blessed by Jim’s life of ministry at EFREE for many years. We appreciated his deep Biblical wisdom & teaching & interesting anecdotes with his Scottish lilt. His sense of humour reminded me so much of my own cherished Preacher dad’s dry sense of humour. Our deepest condolences to Ena & the family. Our prayers are with you.

Pastor Scobbie moved to Steinbach and came to the Free Church when I was a teenager. He was the first person ever with a Scottish accent that I talked to (that can recall), so long ago. I enjoyed that accent! "Father", as in "Heavenly Father", rhymed with "rather". : ) It is with sad affection that I say "see you again" to the man with the smiling eyes and look forward to seeing him again at Home.

I was one of Jim's students at Prov years ago. His classroom teaching and mentoring had a profound influence on me then, and on my pastoral ministry now. His love for the Lord, for the Scriptures, and for the church were so clearly evident. I remember, sometime after I graduated, he took me out for breakfast, to see how I was doing and to encourage me in ministry. I still recall many of the things he said in the classroom and to me personally. He was firm in his biblical convictions, yet at the same time he was always warm and approachable. What a wonderful combination for a preacher, pastor, professor.
My sympathies to Ena and family. May God comfort you in Christ, and fill you with resurrection hope.

Jim's good reputation helped bring our family to Steinbach. In 1999, when I completed my time at seminary at Briercrest I was considering a Youth Pastor job in Steinbach. I asked former president [with Steinbach roots] John Barkman what he thought of Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church. He asked, "Is that Jim Scobbie's church?" I said it was and he told me that THAT was a good pastor and a good church. Jim and Ena treated me like a son! When I first started as Youth Pastor at Emmanuel, I was commuting from Rosenort where my wife Pam, our kids and I were staying until we took possession of our house. Some nights during that 6-week period, when I had an evening youth event or meeting and also a morning meeting the next day, I was a house guest at the Scobbies' place. I'd wake up in the basement of my new boss and smiled at the thought of it! I loved the conversations and the breakfast times. I especially marvelled at the "pre-heating of the teacups" routine. Jim was a much-loved pastor in our church. He was a wise and respected leader at the district and national levels. Pastor Jim was friendly, wise and loved a good chuckle. I appreciated his encouragement, advice and listening ear this past year as I changed roles in our church. Ena, thanks for your interest in Pam and our family. We also are very thankful for your example as a caring mentor to many. "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1" In Christ, Kent and Pam Martens

Our hearts are saddened for you all. We lived across the street from the Scobbbie's from 2013 to 2017. We will always remember their kindness. Our first winter there a terrible snowstorm had us stuck at home, and our snowblower would not start. Seeing us struggle Jim came to our aid with his small (but working) snowblower. This was only one of many kindnesses. May God be especially near to all of you in this time of grief.

My first husband & our family were members of the Pine City Evangelical Free Church while Pastor Jim served that church in the 1970’s. Ena was a beloved babysitter for our son, Cary. He & their daughter, Tara, were about age 3 at the time & became good playmates. I’ll always remember the wonderful impact
Jim & Ena had on my life as a Christ-follower.
My love & sincere sympathy to Ena & her family as they grieve the loss of Jim,

Ena, Heather, Sheila, Laura, Andrew and Tara..... our hearts are broken for you. Jim was a loving husband and father and a wonderful friend to so many. During your ministry at PCEFChurch, 48 years ago he married us and our friendship was deep. He, Gary and Jack spent hours in a boat. It’s unbelievable he is gone to our eternal home. He will be missed greatly by so many. We so wish we could be there to wrap our arms around all of you. Our love and prayers are with you in the coming days and weeks. We love you! Jim is (not "was", "is") my beloved father-in-law. He is fully alive in glory. He has heard his Lord say. "Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter in to the joy of your Master." There is so very much I could say - all of it would be good. I can't think what to zero in on. I am heart broken. And I am very eager to see him again. And I will. I will! To God be the glory.

Pastor Scobbie was only my second pastor. I was a young girl but I remember his deep love of the Bible, his unconditional love for the family of God and his words and actions in the church and in his home being authentic and full of joy. I remember the “frut of the SpiRIT” in his Scottish lilt being something compelling and overflowing in his life. God used him in so many ways - even in a young girl’s life so many years ago. My deepest sympathy to Mrs Scobbie, Heather, Sheila, Andrew, Laura and Tara and all the family. xx
