Obituary of Helen Krahn

Helen Krahn, age 72, of Kleefeld, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 20, 2023, at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Daniel, and their three incredibly adorable children: Renita (Dave), Darren (Katharina), and Andrea (Blaine). She will also be lovingly remembered by nine grandchildren, five brothers, and five sisters.

She was predeceased by her mother, father, and one brother.

Helen (Mom) was born on October 27, 1950, in rural Saskatchewan and moved with her family to Gladstone, Manitoba. As a young woman she attended Steinbach Bible College where she graduated in 1971. At this time her family moved to La Crete, Alberta, and she decided to go with them. This is where she met Danny whose full head of hair, meticulously clean fingernails, serious faith, and fun personality swept her off her feet. What he lacked in traditional romanticism he made up for in reliability and hilarity, and so they were married in the summer of 1974. Together they lived blissfully in High Level, Alberta, Warman, Saskatchewan, Hinton, Alberta, and in retirement Kleefeld, Manitoba.

In High Level Mom worked as a teller at the Bank of Montreal but soon traded that in for concurrent full-time jobs as a mother, homemaker, personal chef, live-in health aid, cleaner, decorator, story teller, behavioral psychologist, fashion consultant, accountant, law enforcement, and first responder to emergencies of remarkable diversity. Mom’s home was admirably shipshape: she was clean, orderly, efficient, and generously particular – skills she passed to her children who are now fully equipped to perpetuate, in theory. Mom’s faith was steadfast, and this she passed on as well to her own family and also to many others as she served as a Sunday school teacher for 40+ years. Eventually as her children left home Mom’s book smarts, work ethic, and knack for numbers caught up with her and she worked seasonally as a tax preparer, nobly navigating grotesque complexity for the sake of the citizenry.

Mom loved flowers and natural beauty. She enjoyed gardening, crafting, puzzling, and especially quilting. But most of all Mom loved being with her family and friends, visiting on all kinds of topics, playing games, and laughing until she cried. She will be dearly missed.

In lieu of a charity suggestion, and in regard for Mom’s love of flowers, we invite friends who so desire to contribute flowers deliverable to Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, between 12-4pm, March 23, 2023.
